After a significant break, including due to the global pandemic and various border considerations, this most revered pilgrimage is set to resume officially for Indian citizens this year. This announcement brings immense joy and relief to thousands of spiritual seekers across India who have been patiently waiting to visit the abode of Lord Shiva and the holy Lake Manasarovar.

When Will Kailash Mansarovar Open for Indian Pilgrims in 2025?

The Yatra for Indian pilgrims is scheduled to commence in June 2025 and will continue through September 2025. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for undertaking the challenging journey in the high Himalayas.

Important Points for Indian Pilgrims: Now that Kailash Mansarovar is Open for Indian Devotees

As per the rules of the Chinese government, it is a must that travelers apply for the permit through an authorized travel agency. The process of applying for the permit varies for Indian travelers and Non-Indian travelers. The travel agency acts on behalf of the travelers in the group, as required by the Chinese regulations. Hence, the travel agency sets the dates for travel as they will be dealing with multiple people to create a group large enough to apply for a group visa.

First, the travel agencies require you to fill out a booking form to purchase a package. If you are traveling in a large group (numbers may vary between travel agencies), you can also request a customized trip and select your date of travel.

Here’s how the permit process works for different travelers through Nepal:

  • For Non-Indian Travelers:
    • You need to send color-scanned copies of your passport to the travel agency. They will use these to apply for your group visa and Tibetan permit.
    • The time for the permit to be granted by the Tibetan authority is not fixed, but it usually takes about 15-20 days.
    • You can easily get a Nepalese Visa upon arrival at Kathmandu Airport.
  • For Indian Travelers:
    • You will be required to send your original passports to the travel agency. They will apply for the permit and visa on your behalf.
    • Generally, your passport will be sent back to you via courier once the visa is approved.
    • Good to know: Since Indian citizens don’t need a passport to travel to Nepal (any other government-authorized identification like a PAN Card will do), you can also choose to pick up your passport once you arrive in Nepal. This streamlined process is part of what makes Kailash Mansarovar open for Indian pilgrims.

Note: Please be aware that even if you already have a valid Chinese Visa stamped on your passport, you will still be required to apply for a Chinese paper group visa when you are travelling to Tibet through Nepal. Your existing valid stamped Chinese visa will be automatically cancelled by the Embassy.

Which Routes Are Being Used for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra?

In Nepal, travel agencies that are members of the Association of Kailash Tour Operators in Nepal (AKTON) are authorized to organize tours to Kailash. Make sure that the travel agency from which you purchase your package is a member of AKTON.

  • Timure (Nepal Border) – Overland Route: This route begins with an overland journey from Kathmandu to the Timure border (Rasuwagadhi) in Nepal. After completing immigration formalities, you’ll cross into Kyirong (Kerung) in Tibet and continue your journey by road. This is a popular choice for pilgrims who prefer a comprehensive road trip experience through the scenic landscapes of Nepal and Tibet.
  • Lucknow/Nepalgunj – Helicopter Route: For pilgrims prioritizing comfort and speed, this route is highly recommended. It typically involves travelling from Lucknow (India) to Nepalgunj (Nepal) by road. From Nepalgunj, pilgrims take a flight to Simikot, followed by a thrilling helicopter ride to Hilsa (Nepal-Tibet border). After crossing into Tibet, the journey continues by road. This option significantly reduces travel time and strenuous trekking, making it suitable for those with time constraints or who prefer a less physically demanding journey.

Both these routes offer distinct experiences, blending spiritual devotion with unique Himalayan adventures. Regardless of the route, rest assured that Kailash Journeys prioritizes your safety, comfort, and a truly profound spiritual experience.

Age Limit

The age limit for a Kailash Trip is 10-70 years. People over 70 – 75 are required to provide a medical certification of fitness and good health to apply.

Why This Pilgrimage Matters

Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar hold profound spiritual significance across Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and the Bon faith. Performing the circumambulation (Kora or Parikrama) of Mount Kailash is believed to cleanse sins and lead to spiritual liberation. A dip in the holy waters of Lake Manasarovar is considered purifying.

Planning Your Sacred Journey

This reopening provides a golden opportunity for Indian devotees. Stay updated with the official MEA website for exact application timelines and detailed guidelines. For those seeking alternative routes or comprehensive private tour packages (often originating from Nepal), Kailash Journeys can also assist in planning your spiritual adventure, subject to all necessary international regulations and permits. This confirms that, yes, Kailash Mansarovar is open for Indian pilgrims once again.
