Lhasa Tour – Tibet - Itinerary & Details

Tibet – Shangri-La, the land of snows, the roof of the world. A land of ancient Buddhist culture, awesome landscape, and artistic monasteries and centuries old caravan trails. Tibet is a destination out of ordinary. Tibet covers an area of 1228400 sq. km and has a population of 3.03 million.

Tibetan mountains and plateaus are the youngest mountains in the world. They are less than 4 million years old and were created along with the creation of the Himalayas. Geographically Tibet contains three distinct regions. With an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, Tibet is considered to be the highest region in the world; often referred to as the “Roof of the World”. Remote, beautiful, and sacred; this largely undiscovered land is illuminated by countless Buddhist shrines and is surrounded by the magnificent Himalayan mountains, including Mount Everest (north face) which is the highest point on the planet. In this Lhasa Tour, you will visit the major parts of Tibet within few days. You can add more days if you like to extend your Lhasa Tour.

Full day Sightseeing in Lhasa: Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery

    • You will spend the morning touring Drepung Monastery, the biggest monastery in Tibet, which formerly housed more than 10,000 monks. Your guide will introduce key figures in Tibetan Buddhist history and give thorough explanations of the religion’s worldview as you navigate the Coqen Hall. After that, you’ll go to the famous Loseling College (or something similar), which gives you an idea of what Tibetan monks study and do. Discover the daily routines and living conditions of the Tibetan monks by touring their dormitories.
    • In the afternoon, you’ll visit Sera Monastery, one of Tibet’s ‘great three’ Gelug monasteries, to witness the famous Tibetan Monks Debate (15:00 – 17:00, Monday through Saturday). Your guide will elaborate on how Tibetan monks participate in these debates to gain knowledge and advance in their academic careers.

Full day sightseeing: Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street

    • Your first destination after breakfast is the Potala Palace, which offers a broad perspective of the Old Town of Lhasa. Explore the history of the palace, its remarkable treasures, and the lives and tales of the Dalai Lamas. The 33rd great king of Tibet’s meditation cave and the gilded burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas are the most priceless collections in Potala Palace.
    • Following your tour of the Potala Palace, you will go to Longwangtan Park, which is located at the base of the building. Here, you can participate in regional Tibetan folk activities and enjoy the magnificent Potala Palace from a new angle.
    • You will travel to the Jokhang Temple, the center of Tibetan religion, in the afternoon. A twelve-year-old statue of Buddha Sakyamuni can be found inside. Outside, pilgrims are seen kneeling in front of the Jokhang Temple. You can explore the old market and participate in kora, a religious circle of a building or mountain, with pilgrims and locals along Barkhor Street, which runs around the temple.
